Project Sandberg: Lean In

Last month we launched Project Sandberg, an initiative aimed at closing the leadership gap in tech by empowering high-performing, high-potential women within our organisation. The program is dedicated to fostering growth, building confidence, and equipping women to lead in the evolving tech landscape.

Project Sandberg involves a monthly workshop, hearing from inspiring speakers and taking part in a series of experiences and learning opportunities designed to equip participants with the skills they need to excel in leadership roles.

With the group now two sessions in, we caught up with Vicki Chen, Head of Intelligence, Trading and Digital Operations who has shared her experience of the program so far.

Q: What does Project Sandberg represent to you, and what is it about?

Vicki: The project really shows Foxtel Group’s commitment to diversity and inclusion particularly within the tech industry, they are driving change and supporting more women to reach senior leadership roles. The setup of the project centres on helping women in technology develop the skills, confidence and connections that are needed to succeed. We’ve completed two days of workshops so far working on refining our personal brands, building executive presence, and learning how to lead effectively. It’s been such a good opportunity to get to know other women that share similar challenges and goals to support each other’s personal and professional growth.

Q: When you first heard about the program, what excited you?

Vicki: So much! Most importantly that Foxtel Group is actively supporting women in tech and actively supporting diversity and inclusion. The backing and sponsor of the CTO is huge –  it shows the program is highly valued at the most senior level and I’m super excited to receive 1:1 coaching and support from leaders at the highest level. This is a rare opportunity to focus on my career in a structured and supportive way.

Q: What have you really enjoyed about the program so far?

Vicki: I’ve genuinely enjoyed the sense of community among the participants. From our introductions to our show-and-tell activity, there’s been a strong sense of companionship and support that’s both refreshing and motivating. Additionally, I have to call out Sally – her insights on how to manage your brand at work and tips on driving and building our career were so inspiring. The professional photoshoot that was done on Day 2 was also fun and interactive, there was a nice confidence boost came with that experience.

Overall, this hasn’t been the standard program that I am used to going in to, it is very thorough and considered, providing a unique mix of personal development and community spirit.

Q: What’s your biggest takeaway so far?

Vicki: My biggest takeaway so far is the value of visibility and the importance of taking ownership of my career path. The insights from Sally on adaptive leadership and maintaining authenticity made a big impact on me. I’m learning that being vocal, visible, and intentional about my career journey is essential for making meaningful contributions and for future leadership roles.

A message that really struck me was how the role of women as leaders has evolved. We’re not just encouraged to have a seat at the table anymore; we’re encouraged to take the centre seat and truly own our space. This has inspired me to approach leadership with a stronger sense of purpose and to step forward with confidence, knowing that my voice and contributions matter.

Q: How has the program shaped your approach to your work?

Vicki: The program has helped me approach my work with a renewed focus on proactive leadership and clarity. For example, we did the Clifton Strengths assessment along with a one-on-one debrief with Karina. This exercise has been instrumental in helping me approach my work with a more strengths-based mindset. Through this process, I’ve gained clarity on my top 10 strengths and how to leverage them to drive results, both for my team and in broader initiatives.

Karina's debrief was particularly valuable because she helped me to see how each strength will contribute to my leadership approach. No need to focus on areas of development but rather lean in and harness my natural strengths and bring more energy and effectiveness to my role.

Q: What elements of the program have inspired you?

Vicki: I’ve been inspired by the supportive mentorship of the leaders, the emphasis on staying true to yourself and building a network for personal and professional growth was powerful. It’s inspiring to know that leaders at the highest levels are invested in helping us grow—not only for the company’s benefit but also for our individual journeys.

Q: What advice would you have someone that will be part of the program in the future?

Vicki: Come in with an open mind, be ready to embrace every moment and connect with the participants and anyone in the program, i.e. both Bec and Karina and The Dott Group. This is a unique opportunity to learn from leaders and build meaningful relationships, so make the most of every workshop, networking event and mentoring sessions

If someone asks me, the last and most important thing is to bring your authentic self. The program encourages you to be true to who you are; it's a safe space and enables you to be true to your own journey.

Also, remember to have fun! Show and tell, and the professional photoshoot are memorable highlights, and you can have some fun with that too.

Project Sandberg is an eight-month program that the Foxtel Group is looking to roll out annually to ensure a diverse, future-fit pipeline of talent in technology. We’d like to thank Vicki for her time in sharing her experience with us and looking forward to hearing more about the program soon!
